Script Writing Assignment

Script Assignment

Act 1
A man is at the grocery store picking up items and snacks for a New-year’s party. He is very excited to celebrate this year (unlike every year). He had invited his boss and work mates; hence everything must be perfect.
He looks at the checkout line and decides it is too long. He uses the self-checkout instead.  He reaches home looks around to see if everything is perfect for tonight's party. He arrange some chairs for the party, then sits down on the couch and watches TV for a while before he hears a doorbell. He opens the door.


Main Character: Hello
Work mate: Hello
Boss: Hello

They all walk towards a few awkwardly arranged seats and sit down. They blankly stare at each other. It is clear that they are not close friends and are merely work mates. The character's goal is to impress his boss and build more relationships. In a desperate attempt to break the ice:

Main character: So what are your plans for this year?
Work mate: uummh, I haven't decided yet...

Main character laughs nervously and looks towards his boss.  
Boss: I will quit smoking and loose weight. You (talking to the main character) are a perfect example of a healthy well-balanced person. I never see you smoke, and you always bring a healthy lunch from home.
Main character: Thank you. Yes, I am very strict about my diet.

The three men stare at each other. The main character remembers to get up to prepare some snack. When he reaches the kitchen he begins to look for the groceries. To his surprise, he is unable to find the grocery bags.   

Act 2
The main character looks around in the kitchen but no luck. Meanwhile, outside in the living room the two work mates sit down impatiently. The lame music playing through the ipod is now off. The setting is quit and awkward. There is a loud  sound of moving pots and glasses.
Inside the kitchen the main character is looking around for snacks and drinks.  He opens a can of Cheetos and finds 3 pieces left. He eats one with a happy, satisfied look on his face. He then neatly arranges the two in a small plate. He peeks outside and waves to his silent mates. They wave back. 

Work mate: what is he doing in there?
Boss: I am not sure but I’m looking forward for some refreshments.
Work mate: Should we go there and assist?
Boss: No let’s stay here. He seems to know what he is doing.

Back in the kitchen the main character is now looking for wine. There is barely any left.  He looks back out at his friends and tries to act like everything is normal. He smiles and they smile back. He decides to use some balsamic vinegar and mixes it with sugar to cover for the missing wine. He then goes back outside and serves his work mates the snack and the wine.  
Boss: Thank you
Work mate: Thank you 


The boss and the friends look awkwardly at the plate with the one Cheeto placed in the middle of each late. They then look at each other in suspicion.
The main character goes back to his seat and sets with one leg crossing the other. He raises his glass and gives a small speech.

Main Character: I wish this year we’ll reach our goals and accomplish our dreams.
They raise their glasses to that and begin to eat the Cheetos and drink the “wine”.  The main character pretends that it is the best wine ever. I’ve been saving this wine for a special occasion. It is precious.
The two men glanced at each other then at the main character.


Main character: Excuse me; I will go to the kitchen for refill. Does anyone want some more wine or anything else?

The two men look at each other then at him and shake their head refusing his offer and murmur: Thanks you, no thanks I’m still enjoying mine.

The main character: very well.

The main character walks in to the kitchen.

Boss: this party is horrible. I am ready to leave
Work mate: I am ready to leave too. I cannot take more of this wine. It’s not even midnight yet.
Boss: think of something to get us out of this mess.
The work mate looks around and find a wall clock.
Work mate: I have an idea
Boss: what?
Work mate: We move the clock forward a couple of hours to midnight.
 Boss: That is brilliant!


The main character comes out of the kitchen, and finds his boss and the friend standing next to the clock. He looks at the clock and sees that It is a few minutes to New-year’s day.

Main character: Oh my god! It is almost 12:00? Doesn’t time fly when you are having fund.
Boss: Thank you for your hospitality. See you on Monday.
Work mate: Thank you for a wonderful evening!


The two men exit the apartment. On their way out they see the neighbor of the main character throwing a party, which looks like fun.  They walk in there.

Act 3
Inside the main character’s apartment he is getting ready to sleep. As soon as he lay in bed, he hears sounds of a count down
A group of people from the other apartment: “10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 , 3, 2, 1. Happy New Year”
The main character pulls out his alarm clock from the drawer and finds that it had only gotten to midnight.  He lay back in bed with a disappointed look on his face.
